The Green Bay Packers hope that they won’t have to rely on Malik Willis to make a serious run for the Lombardi trophy, but the team has assessed him as one of the more capable backups to have behind Jordan Love.
The Packers are happy with the development the former Tennessee Titans QB has shown throughout the preseason. However, he knows better than anyone that his position as QB2 is far from secure.
The quality of performances he showed during his final year in Tennessee put a lot of questions on his future as a quarterback. His play for the coming season will determine whether he’ll still have a spot in the Packers or prepare for a life on the fringes of the NFL.
As the pressure mounts up on Willis, he made a daring promise to himself, the organizations, and the fans who will be backing him up the entire year.
Malik Willis promises to be ready for the Green Bay Packers’ Week 1 game vs. Philadelphia
Willis talks about the trade that sent him from Tennessee to the Packers and what his approach will be for the coming season.
“I’m going to take this thing day by day and do what I can to prepare myself to be in position to do that,” Willis said. “… The process, I mean, it’s more than anything just getting in front of it and just learning everything you can, being really a sponge to anything the coaches have, anything the other guys in the room have, anything that I can read on my own and watch film, seeing it done. Just more than anything, just repetition. That’s what it is at this point.”
Green Bay Packers fans don’t have much to go about when it comes to Willis’ performance for the Titans last year. He only appeared in three games last season, throwing for 74 yards and no touchdowns. He won’t likely get as many reps for the Packers this year, but it’s in his best interests to be in the best possible shape.
