The Green Bay Packers drafted 11 players during the 2024 NFL Draft. The Packers organization also has a chance to make history this season with rookies. For 19 straight seasons, an undrafted rookie has made the roster. It will be interesting to see whether or not it will be 20 straight seasons it will happen.
Green Bay switched from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3 defense this offseason. The Packers hope it will pay off this season. The Green Bay Packers offense has tons of potential and so does the defense with this switch.
Green Bay Packers Rookie Cornerback Kalen King Is On the Bubble To Make the 53-Man Roster
King was a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Penn State. It was a surprise when general manager Brian Gutekunst did not draft a cornerback in the earlier rounds.
Brian Sampson of dairylandexpress.com thinks that Green Bay Packers rookie cornerback Kalen King is on the bubble to make the 53-man roster out of training camp. Sampson said:
“Kalen King was dubbed one of the “biggest steals” of the draft after the Packers selected him in the seventh round. That was after a down season at Penn State knocked him down from a potential first-round pick to one of the final selections in the entire draft in just one year.
Now, King might not even make a roster coming out of training camp. The Packers have five cornerbacks ahead of him with starting experience–Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, Carrington Valentine, Keisean Nixon and Corey Ballentine. However, King can make the roster as the sixth corner if he shows enough potential. Hopefully, he carries that chip on his shoulder from the draft.”
Alexander will be one of the starting cornerbacks on the roster this season. Stokes and Valentine will compete for the other spot. If Eric Stokes gets injured once again in training camp, it can very well open up the door for Kalen King to make the team.
However, Kalen King can not rely on an injury to make the team. He will have to outplay others during camp. If he does outplay others during training camp, the Green Bay Packers will have some tough choices to make.
At one point, King was viewed as a first or second-round talent but was a seventh-round choice. It would be interesting to see them keep six cornerbacks on the roster, but the odds are they will only keep five cornerbacks on the roster after all.
