The Green Bay Packers have finished OTA’s and will start mandatory mini camp this week. A major difference between these two sets of practices is that the mini camp is, well, mandatory. OTA’s are optional, though players do get workout bonuses for participating. Among those that were not present at the optional activities was star cornerback Jaire Alexander.

Throughout the duration of OTA’s, media members were able to attend a total of three practice sessions. During and after these sessions, they were able to share their observations, both good and bad, of noteworthy Packers players. One of the things that stuck out to many was that Jordan Love seemed to struggle a bit at times. Even Love himself, in a conversation with ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, identified one particular thing that he is not pleased with in regards to his play.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Wants to Throw Better on the Run
One of the most difficult parts of the quarterback position is being able to throw accurately and quickly while on the run. Brett Favre excelled at this and Aaron Rodgers did as well (as he excelled in most things). However, it is that aspect of the game that Demovsky noted was a struggle for Love during OTA’s, and Love identified as something he is frustrated with as well:
“While his throws from the pocket have mostly come out clean and spinning tightly, Love’s spirals sometimes turn into wobblers when he has to throw on the move. That has been especially true when moving to his left during the OTA practices open to reporters.
“Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he wasn’t concerned, even referencing Peyton Manning not always throwing the tightest spirals, but Love acknowledged it could be an issue, saying, ‘As a quarterback, it’s never fun to see the ball not spinning exactly how you want it to, so we’re just working through that.'”
It is important to remember that Love is still just 24 years old. He is far from a polished product, but the team certainly believes that he is capable of starting for them this year. Had they not been, Aaron Rodgers would probably still be their starting quarterback instead of attending the Tony Awards in New York.
Fortunately for Love, the Packers offensive line is one of the best in the NFL. That being said, being able to throw well on the run is a necessity in today’s game. He simply will not be able to function on a high level unless he has that ability.
And he has a long way to go before we can compare him to Peyton Manning.
