The Green Bay Packers may have some questions to answer on their roster this offseason, but there is no denying the fact that they have a bright future. For the second year in a row, Green Bay fielded the youngest roster in the NFL, and for the second year in a row took a trip to the playoffs.
Part of the reason for the team’s regular season improvement (from 9-8 in 2023 to 11-6 this year) was defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley and his new scheme. While there are still areas in which the unit can improve (pass rush), there is no denying that Green Bay’s defense was better than it has been in years.
Of course, the players should get as much credit as Hafley, and two rookies have continued to rack up their postseason honors based on their play this season.
Green Bay Packers Stars Edgerrin Cooper and Evan Williams Were Named to PFWA’s All-Rookie Team Defense
One day after Xavier McKinney was the only Green Bay player named to the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-NFL Team, linebacker Edgerrin Cooper and safety Evan Williams were both named to their All-Rookie Team (Defense).
They are the first pair of Packers teammates to be named to PFWA’s All-Rookie since Clay Matthews and BJ Raji were both selected to the team in 2009.
Despite playing in just 14 games due to injury (and not getting much playing time early in the season), Cooper recorded 87 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits, one interception, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries.
Williams, who also missed time due to injury, had rookie season totals of 49 tackles, one interception, three passes defended, and one forced fumble. He allowed just a 56.7% completion percentage and 77.8 passer rating when targeted.
Previously, both Cooper and Williams were named to PFF‘s All-Rookie Defensive Team.
Jared Verse of the Los Angeles Rams was named PFWA’s Defensive Rookie of the Year.
