The Green Bay Packers dropped their Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles last week by a score of 22-10. From the onset, it was clear that Green Bay was not going to have a good day. Kick returner/cornerback Keisean Nixon fumbled the opening kickoff, which he took out of the endzone, after taking a brutal hit from former Packers linebacker Oren Burks.
The Eagles recovered the fumble and scored the game’s first touchdown. And it was all down hill from there.
While Green Bay made many more self-inflicted mistakes, that fumble, which arial replay showed Nixon recovered, was a much-talked about topic during and after the game.
Green Bay Packers Fans React to Philadelphia Eagles Linebacker Oren Burks Getting Fined
The replay also showed that Burks’ brutal hit on Nixon was an illegal helmet-to-helmet one, a play that should have resulted in a penalty. However, no flag was thrown.
On Saturday, though, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported that the NFL has fined Burks $8,333 for his hit on Nixon on the opening kickoff:
The NFL fined #Eagles LB Oren Burks $8,333 for unnecessary roughness (use of helmet) — his hit on #Packers KR Keisean Nixon that caused a fumble on the opening kickoff last week.
No flag was thrown.

While it was a devastating blow to the Packers, they were their own worst enemy. Personal fouls, turnovers, and poor fundamental football was their ultimate undoing. That being said, one still has to wonder how the game might have been different if the officials had gotten these calls (no-calls) right in the first place (or if Nixon had just downed the ball in the endzone).
Green Bay Packers Fans Are Furious the Officials Did Not Call a Penalty When Oren Burks Hit Keisean Nixon
To say that fans were upset both immediately after the play was reviewed and now that Burks has been fined would be an understatment:

This one goes out to all the friendly folks on this here platform who called me a #Packers homer (or worse) for daring to suggest this might’ve been an illegal hit. I’m sure @keiseannixon feels so much better now. 🤨 https://t.co/SW322LPyIj

If we can fine defenders for high-speed plays why can’t we fine refs? https://t.co/vYvLn8icpr

This is so great to see! Didn’t affect the game even a little bit! https://t.co/04QHanHrr0

Interestingly, Nixon was destroyed by Packers fans on social media following the play. Now, many of these fans are defending him saying that it should have been a penalty and that he recovered his own fumble.
