Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers keeps a very tight circle. In the past, he has said multiple times that any reports about things he says, does, or plans to do that are not reported straight from him are likely untrue because the people he keeps close to him do not talk to the media.
Of course, that has not stopped the floodwaters of reports about him and/or his future plans from being published. Sometimes, those stories are accurate. Other times, they are not.
The biggest question and potential story surrounding Rodgers now, obviously, is whether or not he will retire after a disappointing season with the New York Jets.
Former Green Bay Packers Quarterback Aaron Rodgers May Not Return to the New York Jets
It is no secret to anyone that Rodgers played well below the standards he and the Jets had for him going into the season. He finished 2024 with a 63.0% completion percentage, 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 90.5 passer rating, which was actually one of the best seasons by a quarterback in New York’s franchise history.
On Sunday, it what was a “meaningless” game for the Jets, Rodgers turned back the clock and looked like the quarterback they had hoped they were getting when they acquired the four-time NFL MVP from the Packers in 2023.
The Jets defeated the Miami Dolphins 32-20 to improve to 5-12 on the season. Rodgers completed 23 of 36 passes for 274 yards, four touchdown passes, and one interception, giving him a passer rating of 112.5 for the game.
Rodgers also threw his 500th career touchdown in that game, and connected with former Packers wide receivers Davante Adams and Allen Lazard for what is almost certainly the last time in Jets uniform.
After a tumultuous season that saw the Jets fire head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas, very few people expect Rodgers to be back in New York next season. Of course, Rodgers himself has said he is not sure if he wants to play at all in 2025 yet. He may choose to retire.
Davante Adams Would Be Surprised if Aaron Rodgers Chose to Retire
After the Packers traded Rodgers to the Jets in 2023, many assumed that Adams, who had been traded to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, was sure to join him. Indeed, New York tried to acquire the three-time All-Pro at the 2023 trade deadline (while Rodgers was injured), but were unable to get a deal done.
However, they did end up being able to trade for him this year, reuniting him with Rodgers in the hopes that the two could rediscover the magic they had together while playing in Green Bay.
It did not work as well as the Jets had hoped. Still, Adams caught 67 passes for 854 yards and seven touchdowns for the Jets, giving him 85 receptions, 1,063 yards, and eight touchdowns on the season.
As one of Rodgers’ closest friends, Adams has better insight than most into what the four-time NFL MVP may do. And he says he would be surprised if Rodgers retires:

“I mean, he’s got a lot, you’ve seen. He hasn’t played perfect, but no one has played perfect. It’s been an interesting year, seeing what he’s battled through here and the people kind of jumped out of nowhere saying he doesn’t have it anymore.
“Obviously, that’s not the case, you can see that when he’s healthy. It would be a little bit of a surprise [if he retired], but at the same time Calvin Johnson retired after like eight years or something… You can’t blame him if he does, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he were to come back.”
There is something to be said about Rodgers and wanting to end his career on his terms. It does not seem that being forced out by a team is something that he could consider “his terms.”
Perhaps he will be back in 2025.
