The Green Bay Packers made a series of then-unpopular decisions following the 2022 NFL season. Of course, the most noteworthy of these was trading four-time NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets in order to make way for Jordan Love.
However, Rodgers was not the only long-time veteran that saw his tenure with the Packers come to an end prior to the 2023 season. One of these others was franchise-leading scorer Mason Crosby, who had been Green Bay’s kicker since 2007. Of course, he was replaced by Anders Carlson, who had a rather forgettable short tenure with the Packers.
Former Green Bay Packers Kicker Anders Carlson Has Battled Inconsistency
As fans remember all too well, Carlson did not have a good season in his first and only year with Green Bay. He led the NFL in missed kicks while making 81.8% of his field goals and a woeful 87.2% of his extra points.
Due to his struggles, the Packers decided to bring in veteran Greg Joseph to compete with Carlson for the kicker job in the offseason and training camp. However, neither performed very well and both ended up being released. Eventually, Green Bay settled on Brandon McManus on their kicker after Brayden Narveson also struggled through the first few weeks of the season.
While the Packers solved their kicking issues, Carlson bounced around the NFL. He lost out on a spot on the Detroit Lions practice squad in the early weeks of the season. Joseph was the one who won the job.
Afterwards, Carlson was signed by the San Francisco 49ers and put on their practice squad. He ended up appearing in two games for them when their two kickers were injured. He made all five of his field goals, but just three of his four extra point attempts.
After being released by San Francisco, Carlson landed the kicking gig with Rodgers and the Jets. In five games with New York, he made 80% of his field goals, but just 81.8% of his extra points. He ended up getting benched, in favor of Joseph, in Week 18.
Former Green Bay Packers Kicker Anders Carlson Signed a Futures Contract with the New York Jets
Despite being benched in the final week of the season, it appears that the Jets are going to be giving Carlson a chance to earn a job in 2025. Earlier today, it was announced that he had signed a futures contract with New York:
The Jets have signed K Anders Carlson and TE Neal Johnson to reserve/future contracts.
Carlson converted 8/10 FGs and 9/11 extra point attempts in five games for the club.

By signing a futures contract, the Jets can keep Carlson on their 90-man roster until they need to be trimmed to 53 ahead of the 2025 NFL season. It is likely that the former Packers kicker will be competing for a job in training camp, though it is entirely possible he gets released in favor of other players at more premium positions before that.
