When the Green Bay Packers first traded Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, many fans made the joke that he was following the career path blazed by Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre. After 15 seasons as Green Bay’s starting quarterback, Favre was traded to the Jets in favor of Rodgers. After one season in New York, Favre joined the Minnesota Vikings for the final two seasons of his career.
Of course, Rodgers had no intention of mirroring Favre’s final three NFL seasons. He wanted to go to New York and win a Super Bowl. Obviously, that did not happen. And while he spent more time with the Jets than Favre (two seasons compared to one), he now is searching for a new team for the 2025 season after being told he was not wanted anymore in New York.
And though it started as a joke two years ago, the possibility of Rodgers donning a Vikings jersey in 2025 is more probable now more than ever.
Former Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers Could Very Well Join the Minnesota Vikings

On Friday, it was reported that the Seattle Seahawks traded their two-time Pro Bowl quarterback, Geno Smith, to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third round pick. What is more, it was then revealed that Seattle is targeting Sam Darnold, who had a breakout season for the Vikings last year, to be their starting quarterback in 2025.
Minnesota had previously decided not to use the franchise tag on Darnold despite their desire to allow JJ McCarthy, who missed all of his rookie season in 2024 with a torn ACL, to sit and learn for a little while longer before making him their starter.
But while the Vikings were reportedly still interested in bringing Darnold back, he is now not expected to return. As a result, Rodgers is now being linked to possibly joining his former rival:
With Geno Smith headed to the #Raiders, the fallout is dramatic:
— The #Seahawks turn their attention to Sam Darnold, which means..
— The #Vikings time with Darnold is likely over as they turn their eyes to Daniel Jones, though…
— Daniel Jones has options, with Minnesota and the… https://t.co/HbpxgWyMO2— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 8, 2025
As Rapoport notes, Rodgers is also considering joining the New York Giants. However, if he desires to join a team that is already a winner, he cannot do much better than the Vikings, who finished 14-3 last season and boast Justin Jefferson, arguably the best wide receiver in the game.
The Giants, by comparison, finished 3-14.
Former Green Bay Packers Star Aaron Rodgers Is the Best Available Quarterback on the Market

While Rodgers has not been formerly released by New York, they have informed him that he will be designated as a post-June 1 release. Essentially, he is already a free agent.
Last season, Rodgers completed 63.0% of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 90.5 passer rating. These are far better numbers than other quarterbacks on the market (aside from Darnold), which include:
- Zach Wilson
- Trey Lance
- Jacoby Brissett
- Taylor Heinicke
- Justin Fields
- Russell Wilson
This list could also include Daniel Jones, who was released by the Giants last season and spent the remainder of the year on the Vikings’ practice squad. It sounds like Minnesota would like to bring him back, but if he decides to go elsewhere, Rodgers could become their top target.
