The stellar play of Denver Nuggets big man Nikola Jokic and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has made it seem to many that the 2024-25 NBA season Most Valuable Player award is a two-man race. But don’t forget about Milwaukee Bucks superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic.
A late-night NBA hot take: This notion that MVP is a two-man race is absurd, Amick wrote in a recent post on X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter). “The Bucks have won eight of nine, Giannis is doing historic things (on both ends), and is two games behind Denver (Jokic) in the standings. Shai has been unreal – full stop. But it’s a party of three,” Amick continued.
Giannis Antetokounmpo facing stiff competition for 2024-25 NBA MVP award
According to Basketball Reference, Jokic, who is the reigning NBA MVP — an award he’s won three times already — has a 65.7 percent chance of winning the Michael Jordan Trophy this season. Meanwhile, Gilgeous-Alexander has a probability of 24.8 percent. As for Antetokounmpo, his probability is only at 2.6 percent — just barely ahead of New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns (2.3 percent).
There is a long way to go in the 2024-25 NBA regular season, so Antetokounmpo can still add to his MVP case. On the season, the 30-year-old Antetokounmpo is averaging 31.5 points, 12.2 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game while shooting 60.5 percent from the floor to go with a 60.7 effective field goal percentage.
