Lots of names have been floated to become the replacement for Devin Williams who did well for them last season but still got traded to the New York Yankees.
For an MLB analyst, the man they need to fill Williams’ shoes is already with the team.
Veteran right-hand pitcher Trevor Megill made a good account of himself last year while the Brewers were waiting for Williams return.
It’s the same role that he is going to have come 2025. The difference is nobody will return to take his spot.
Just Baseball’s Zach Worden said Megill can grow into a full-time closer for Milwaukee with the departure of Williams.
If he can stay healthy in 2025, Megill has a chance to be one of MLB’s top closers. In posting a 32.8% chase rate and 29.7% whiff rate, the 31-year-old demonstrated that he’s able to miss bats and rack up strikeouts while only throwing two pitches.
Worden also boldly predicts Megill to have a breakout year.
Predicting which relievers are set to break out in any particular year is nearly an impossible task. But Megill has clearly shown that he has the skills to close out games, and now, with the opportunity in front of him to follow in the footsteps of his dominant predecessors, he could break onto the national stage with a strong first half.
Trevor Megill as Devin Williams replacement
Megill, who settled to a $1.94 million deal to avoid arbitration, played 48 games last season, recording a 2.72 ERA. He closed out 26 games for them, with a 50-to-14 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 46 1/3 innings pitched.
He finished the 2024 season as a leading candidate for saves. He logged 21 of 24 save opportunities which came with a 2.72 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. He also had a 50:14 K:BB.
Megill, who stands at 6’8, joined the MLB in 2015 as a seventh round pick by the San Diego Padres.
Replacing Williams will not be his assignment alone. Brewers’ bullpen will see seven pitchers make a return.
Last season, 12 pitchers made 19 innings of relief.
