It’s nothing new for NFL players to make a flashy entrance to training camp. Twitter blew up as Aaron Rodgers walked in to practice in costume. The Packers star looked less like the starting quarterback and more like Nicholas Cage from Con Air. The master marketer of course knew exactly what he was doing. The issue I found wasn’t what he did. It was the reaction of a couple reporters that caught my attention.
Shannon Sharpe went on Undisputed with Skip Bayless and had a harsh reaction to it. “Rodgers wanted to distract us”, Sharpe said. He wanted the world to be tweeting and talking about his Cage in Con Air look alike”, Sharpe continued. “I’m not falling for it. I remember that Rodgers stunk it up his last couple playoff games. You can’t distract me from that”. Before turning it over to Skip he had a few more words saying he needs him to play the post season like he does in the regular season and he’s still a Rodgers fan.
Then Skip came in to the conversation and backed almost everything Sharpe had said. I’m not gonna repeat it again since that’s almost what he did. I watch this and wander do they really believe that Aaron Rodgers thought that deeply into a master plan for distraction. Did he really scheme up, of all things, to look like Con Air Nicholas Cage and that’ll make everyone forget we lost in the playoffs? Of course not.
Come on Skip and Shannon. I watch your show and usually enjoy it but this was reaching for a reaction or topics of debate to the extreme. Do I think Aaron Rodgers walked in looking like Cage for a comedic reaction, yeah probably. He’s got a sense of humor and likes to get a funny reaction. That’s about as far as that went though. No grand elaborate distraction, just being comedic and having a good time. Rodgers, you keep having fun and laughing at the over the top reactions. This wasn’t exactly breaking News but when I saw this I had to throw my opinion in the mix. I’ll have some training camp news coming at you later, but till then check out these articles.
