By and large, No. 17 Wisconsin basketball is still on track to make it to the Big Dance. Even after their 76-68 loss to the unranked Maryland Terrapins on the road on Wednesday, the Badgers have a March Madness-worthy resume. However, the Badgers have hurt their chances for a higher seed by missing out on opportunities to win Quadrant 1 games, particularly those against top 25 NET teams.
Via Will Keller of Badger Blitz:
While the Badgers have two winning steaks of at least six games this season, they haven’t beaten a team ranked in the top 25 of the NCAA NET rankings since knocking off Arizona in mid-November.
Wisconsin basketball has not scored a top 25 NET win since the Arizona game
Since that loss to the Arizona Wildcats (#14 NET) on Nov. 15, Wisconsin basketball has gone winless in four games against top 25 NET teams, including Maryland (#18). The Badgers have also lost to the Michigan Wolverines (#17), Marquette Golden Eagles (#16) and Illinois Fighting Illini (#10).
Nevertheless, the Badgers have a 5-5 Quadrant 1 record. They are also 11-0 in combined Quadrant 2,3 and 4 games.
There are still 10 games left on the Badgers’ schedule in the 2024-25 college basketball season, including some contests involving teams likely inside the top 25 of the NET by the time Wisconsin meets them. Among those are the Purdue Boilermakers, Illinois and Michigan State.
After the loss to the Terrapins, Wisconsin will turn its attention to a date with the Northwestern Wildcats in Evanston before a meeting with the Indiana Hoosiers back in Madison.
