Wisconsin Badgers football suffered a lot in the last transfer portal as some players left. Some to look for opportunity while others did it due to the firing of Phil Longo who was replaced by a new offensive coordinator. Trech Kekahuna was almost one of those.

Kekahuna announced that he is entering the transfer portal not even a month after their season ended. He stayed with the team but it is something that only happened because of a buzzer-beating call made by Grimes to him.
The sophomore wide receiver reveled to On3.com that their new offensive coordinator was crucial in keeping him to the program after he called him just when he was about to go to the airport. He thought that was a crazy moment.
“I was ready to go to whatever school I was going to,” Kekahuna said in an interview with Badger Blitz. “He gave me a call and said he’d love to meet me and just talk ball. He wanted to show what his offense is.”
He then shared that he was already talking to another school and pretty much intent on joining them.

“I was leaning towards one school,” Kekahuna shared. “I was like, ‘I’m going to take my visit and I’m going there.’ I had a lot of connections there.”
Grimes’ plans on Trech Kekahuna
It was Grimes who insisted on keeping Kekahuna who found his niche with the team last year. He played 12 games in 2024, a far cry from his five games played in 2023.
The OC thought it was wrong for the team that they are letting him go so he gave Kekahuna another try and after a brief talk, the latter asked his chauffer to turn around.

What was it that made him come back? Grimes’ plan that will feature him prominently.
“He loves to get his playmakers the ball and he sees me as that,” Kekahuna said.
“He put my film up and he said, ‘You’re going to be making more of these.’”
