Wisconsin Badgers Lose Strong Returning DB For 2025-26 Season Following NCAA Appeal

The Wisconsin Badgers received unfortunate news today after a previous appeal by the NCAA was approved, causing a sudden shift in Madison.

Defensive back and Badgers veteran leader Nyzier Fourqurean transferred into the program two seasons ago and had an instant impact with two sacks and 39 total tackles. Fourqurean previously played for Grand Valley State, a Division-II program that has produced plenty of talent to higher levels in the past.

The defensive back transferred in with two years of eligibility, but after a rule was approved that allowed for junior college athletes to have their eligibility clocks reset following a transfer, Fourqurean filed a preliminary injunction in hopes of earning another year.

While the injunction had bought Fourqurean both time and hope, the season is now very close to ramping up and the decision has been reversed. Currently, Fourqurean would not have eligibility for the upcoming season without further legal action, which very well could not occur in the short amount of time the defensive back has.

The court of appeals sided with the NCAA and lifted the injunction after further reviewing the case and determining one specific factor that is holding Fourqurean back from playing for the Wisconsin Badgers. The court ruled that the claim made by Fourqurean “relies solely” on the defensive back not playing the upcoming season himself, and that there is not an “unreasonable restraint of trade” being shown by Fourqurean.

While the defensive back has time to further gather resources to pursue another legal avenue, some specific parts of the claim being made will have to be clearer and more widespread. If Fourqurean can prove his claim involves more than just himself and the Wisconsin Badgers, but is rather a prevalent issue across college football, then further legal action could prove to be successful.

Fourqurean could still return to the Wisconsin Badgers this season but the likelihood of doing so is slim given the amount of time left before the start of the season.
