The Wisconsin Badgers quarterback situation this season has been very dicey. Tyler Van Dyke was the starting quarterback to start the season, but a season-ending torn ACL had Braedyn Locke step up into the starting quarterback role. With Locke being the starting quarterback now, true freshman quarterback Mabrey Mettauer is the backup quarterback.
Last year, Mettauer was in Texas from The Woodlands and was also a four-star recruit. If something happened to Locke, Mettauer would be the next man up.
Freshman Quarterback Mabrey Mettauer Saw Limited Action Against the Purdue Boilermakers On Saturday For the Wisconsin Badgers
Last weekend, the Wisconsin Badgers defeated the Purdue Boilermakers 52-6. It was a huge blowout in the game that Braedlyn Locke could be subbed out for Mabrey Mettauer. He only threw one pass in the game and completed it for a 2-yard gain.
When Locke was subbed out, he completed 20-of-31 passes for 359 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. Badgers offensive coordinator Phil Longo spoke to Dillon Graff of buckys5thquarter.com and said:
“For the limited action and for what little we asked Mabrey to do Saturday, he did a really good job. I went up to Mabrey, and I said you’re going in next drive, warm up. He did… I went over to him after Braedyn commanded the last drive that he had, and I said, are you nervous? This is your first opportunity. I’ll clean it up for you; he was like, heck no, I’m ready to roll, I have been waiting for this, and he was jacked up to get out on the field. So there’s a sense of calm and a confidence because he knew what he was doing, and I think he was just itching to get out there and show everybody what he could do.”
The only way he would get more action is if Braedyn Locke were to get hurt, which is something that the Badgers do not want moving forward. With the Van Dyke injury, Mettauer can practice with the second unit for Wisconsin instead of being with the third-stringers.
Head Coach Luke Fickell Talks About His Progress
Head coach Luke Fickell spoke also to Dillon Graff about Mettauer’s progress with the team. Fickell said:
“He’s a lot further than he was in the spring. He’s a lot further than he was in fall camp. And I’ve talked about the tough situation for him [which] was those guys battling in front of him, so he wasn’t getting many opportunities to even run with the twos. He probably had a handful of snaps in all of fall camp with the twos. But I think even in the last four weeks, I’ve seen incredible growth. Just the knowledge of the game, his ability to go out there in practice, we try to put him under pressure, and [see] him handle the pressure, the things that we’re doing in practice and be successful with it. So he’s on a really good track.”
He is 6’4″ and weighs 230 lbs. Mabrey Mettauer is going to have to sit and wait patiently for his turn. The Wisconsin Badgers have not had luck with quarterbacks over the last several years. Hopefully, Braedyn Locke could be good for the next year or two and then have Mettauer take over after that and be ready to roll.
