The Wisconsin Badgers and Nebraska Cornhuskers have been two of the best volleyball programs in recent memory. Since 2017, both have won National Championships and are seemingly in the running every year. Leading the way for Nebraska throughout all of his was head coach John Cook and he recently announced his retirement.
John Cook has retired as head coach of Nebraska volleyball
After 25 seasons, an 883-176 record, 14 conference championships, 12 NCAA semifinal appearances, and four national titles, John Cook has announced his retirement from Nebraska volleyball. Replacing him will be Cornhusker alumni Dani Busboom Kelly, who has spent the last eight years in Louisville.
Wisconsin Badgers coach Kelly Sheffield was stunned by John Cook’s retirement
On social media, Badgers coach Kelly Sheffield wanted to publicly thank John Cook for the influence he had on his career, Wisconsin’s volleyball program, and much more. Sheffield began by saying “I was trying to process the news,” but then went on to say “I wouldn’t be where I am as a coach without John. I studied everything he did. From training, systems, community involvement, fan engagement, staff organization -everything. He set the bar and was the ultimate example of how to run an elite program. He did not just have an elite team, but he ran an elite program – there’s a difference.”
“I want to publicly thank John for making the Wisconsin program better during his time here in Madison as the Head Coach and, more importantly, for being the standard in running a championship program. You’ve made the sport better. You’ve made me better. Thank you, congratulations, and best wishes!”
