It’s quite a busy day for Wisconsin Badgers football fans as they officially lose someone and then gained another in one day of news cycle.
Former Badgers quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, who won the 2021 ACC Rookie of the Year, entered the transfer portal last month and quickly decided on a new home by signing with the Southern Methodist University Mustangs football team that is competing at the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision.
He played his first three years in college with the Miami Hurricanes before signing with the Badgers in 2024.
His stint with Wisconsin is not ideal after his season was cut short by a knee injury he suffered in September against Alabama.
He recorded 422 yards and one touchdown for Wisconsin which is impressively backed up by zero interception in 68 pass attempts.
Van Dyke is just one of many players who entered transfer portal last December.
Wisconsin Badgers found a safety Luke Fickell will love
Several players left but the Wisconsin Badgers football does not stop work to recruit players and become competitive again.
The Badgers announced on its X account that they have signed 6’3 safety Matt Jung who was named as this year’s Div. III defensive player of the year for Bethel University.
Bethel University football coach Mike McElroy said Jung is a workhorse and letthing him go is hard.
For the player himself, joining the Badgers is a dream come true since he is a fan of the team.
He did not allow such connection to dim his options though. He said he thought hard about his decision to transfer by considering a lot of factors.
“Then once I realized that the program, the people, the coaches were a place with a culture that I could fit in at, that’s when I knew that I wanted to commit,” he said in an interview with The Athletic.
“Not only growing up a fan but also feeling like home there and feeling like a place where I could see myself at.”
