Revisiting the Last Orioles and Brewers Trade
Ahead of the upcoming Orioles and Brewers series it is interesting to look at trades between the two teams. The most recent trade involved infielder Jonathan Schoop in 2018. Here was the deal:
Brewers Acquire: Jonathan Schoop
Baltimore Acquires: Jonathan Villar
Luis Ortiz- Right Handed Pitcher
Jean Carmona- Shortstop
Let’s break down this trade a little further with the past as a prologue. Of course, the 2018 season ended for Milwaukee with a NL Central title and a berth in the NLCS. That playoff run was one of the better seasons for the Crew in franchise history. Schoop ended up playing in 46 games for Milwaukee and only hit .202 with four home runs.
On the receiving end it is pretty clear that Milwaukee did not get much, save a possible “emotional bump” for being a buyer at the trading deadline vs a seller.
But how did Baltimore end up? Where is everyone now?
Jonathan Villar is no longer playing at the MLB level. Recently in 2022 he signed a minor league deal with the Seattle Mariners. The 32 year old has seemingly ended his major league career as a .255 hitter with 101 career-home runs.
Schoop is currently playing for the Detroit Tigers. He is, again like in 2018, hitting .202.
Luis Ortiz has had a bumpy ride in the MLB. In 2019 he did make it all the way up to Baltimore’s big league club. He did manage to pitch a game for Baltimore.
Ortiz now is with the Phillies organization. He has bumped back and forth between triple AAA and the MLB club, getting spot relief work here and there. He has yet to make any kind of a significant impact.
Carmona Update
Jean Carmona is actually back with the Brewers organization. He was never able to make it past the A ball level. The 23 year old still, certainly, has time to work his way up through an organization. However, he does not seem to hit for power, for average or has much of an ability to get on base. That is not going to serve any aspiring major league ball player well.
For Baltimore Carmona was the “center piece” of the deal. It simply did not work out for him or them.
Carmona is not listed on the Appleton Timber Rattlers roster. His re-signing with the Brewers last season may be short lived.

Final Verdict
This one seems like a draw neither team wanted. It still seems puzzling that Milwaukee made to move to Villar given his impending free agency. But because of the success the team had in 2018, it is hard to discount that.
Based on the lack of production at the major league level from all of the players involved, we can safely call this one a “draw”.
