Marquette Golden Eagles men’s basketball team continue to roll as they recorded their third straight victory by beating the Providence Friars, 78-50.
The bench players received lots of praises lately from coach Shaka Smart but this time, it was not their scoring alone that gets attention. It is the defense of the entire team.
The game started slow for the visiting Golden Eagles but they managed to string up 21 straight points to make it 28-10 in the first half.
The score board did not reflect it but it was defense that dictated this run, something coach Smart said happened largely because of their ‘hand activity’.
“Stevie Mitchell led the way. Chase Ross,” he told reporters when asked what stood out on their team defense.
“We were getting our hands on the basketball. Being disruptive. We thought this was a game where we could force a good amount of turnovers and be disruptive with our hands. The guys did a good job.”
The whole team was in celebratory mood after the game not only because it was New Year’s eve but also because it is the team’s first win on the road against the Friars since February 2019.
Marquette Golden Eagles’ next assignment
The win meant the Golden Eagles remain as the top team in the Big East with a 12-2 record.
It also reflected the team’s composure and ability to overcome adversity after losing to Dayton on December 15. This one occurred a week after they lost to Xavier.
Next up for them are the Creighton Bluejays on this weekend.
The Bluejays’ record may not say it but they are a formidable opponent, having won two straight last week, against St. John’s and Villanova.
