Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy believes there is only one way for Willy Adames to decide to come back to the team. Now a free agent, other teams are free to offer Adames long-term contract deals. The Brewers are just as welcome to give him an offer, but it seems like they won’t be willing to engage in a competition for the kind of contract Adames wants.
Since becoming part of the Milwaukee Brewers roster in a surprise mid-May trade in 2021, Adames had captured the hearts of their fans. The former Tampa Bay Ray shortstop had been a leader on and off the field for Milwaukee these past few years. The Brewers kept Adames in their roster because of his leadership and his being a vital part to the team’s success despite receiving trade interests in the last couple of years.
Pat Murphy was recently a guest on “Foul Territory” podcast. When asked if the Brewers want Adames back, Murphy’s first response was, “I don’t think it makes sense.”
“If he (Adames) comes back, that means he didn’t get the deal that he was looking for,” the Brewers manager said. “I don’t even think about it, to be honest with you, because he’s going to get what he wants.”
How badly does Pat Murphy want Willy Adames back?

Pat Murphy does want Willy Adames back to the Brewers
Willy Adames is reported to seek a $200 million contract in free agency, and he’s likely to get at least $150 million for his next contract. The Brewers are not looking to sign him back for that deal, since they already found a replacement for him in the shortstop position.
While Pat Murphy said it doesn’t make sense to bring Adames back on the team, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t want him back; rather, he just reflected on the reality. In fact, the Brewers manager complimented Adames, saying that he’s a great guy to have on the team.
Some Brewers fans may be clinging on to hope that Adames will re-sign with the Brewers, but even Pat Murphy doesn’t see the possibility of it happening—unless Adames doesn’t get the big contract he’s looking for for some reason. The only hope the Brewers have to get Adames back to the team is if Adames’ market collapses, prompting him to accept a one-year deal with the team similar to the qualifying offer.
Pat Murphy believes Willy Adames will get the contract he’s looking for. That is why the Brewers manager also believes their former shortstop won’t be coming back regardless of how much he or anyone else wants him back.
