The Green Bay Packers, it became clear over the second half of this season, struck gold with rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper.
Thursday, as the NFL Playoffs and an NFC Wild Card showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles loom large, Cooper was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of The Month for December.
Over the season’s final stretch, and largely buoyed by a dominant performance against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday Night Football, Cooper produced 35 total tackles with one sack, 7.5 tackles for loss, one fumble recovery and one interception during the month of December.
How Edgerrin Cooper Became Packers’ Rising Star on Defense
Cooper has been a revelation in the front seven of coordinator Jeff Hafley’s defense, and previously took home Defensive Rookie of The Month honors back in October, as well.
Chosen by the Packers in the second round of last April’s NFL Draft, out of Texas A&M, Cooper emerged as a starter and ascending playmaker on Green Bay’s defense. He capped his rookie season with 87 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, four pass breakups and two fumble recoveries, in just 14 games.
Cooper likely figures to play a key role for the Packers this postseason, and has the look of a cornerstone player Green Bay can continue building around on defense into the future.
