There were several frustrating moments for the Packers in Sunday’s 27-25 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, but few proved more costly than an offsides call against star rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper on a field goal attempt at the end of the first half.
Vikings kicker Will Reichard was given a do-over, after missing a 55-yard field goal attempt, after Cooper was flagged for jumping offsides. The penalty immediately drew the ire of Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, and Reichard ultimately split the uprights on the ensuing 50-yard attempt as time expired.
After the game, Cooper addressed the penalty head-on.
Cooper doesn’t believe he was offsides, according to the referee pre-snap.
“I think I did,” Cooper said, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal, when asked if he had checked with the official before the play.
Cooper was otherwise stellar, turning in another strong performance for coordinator Jeff Hafley’s defense, producing 10 total tackles and swarming to the football all afternoon.
Unfortunately for the Packers, though, a controversial penalty proved costly to Green Bay’s chances of pulling off an upset.
