Pro Football Focus selected Edgerrin Cooper as the Green Bay Packers secret superstar back two weeks ago. His head coach Matt LaFleur agrees.
Cooper is among a few Packers who finished the 2024-25 season on a high note. He was named in the PFWA All-Rookie Team. He was also named to the All Rookie Team Defense alongside teammate Evan Williams.
He has the making of a superstar according to PFF.
LaFleur sees it too but this offseason will be largely instrumental for him to get there.
“I think he’s got superstar potential, I really do,” LaFleur said in his own podcast.
Cooper was drafted 45th overall by Green Bay in last year’s draft. He is a Texas A&M standout where he was a Consensus All-American in 2023 and First-team All-SEC of the same year.
In his first season with the Packers, he recorded a total of 87 tackles, 13 of them for for loss. He also had 3.5 sacks, one interception, four pass defenses, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble.
His best month was in December when he was named NFL Defensive Player of the Week in week 15.
Matt LaFleur defines what Edgerrin Cooper needs to do
Cooper, standing at 6’2 is well on his way to superstardom after his rookie year. However, there is work for him to do.
“As long as he continues to work, which I know he will. I think (linebackers coach Anthony) Campanile does a great job of grinding those guys. It was a huge learning curve coming from Texas A&M to here. And you saw, the more he played, the better he got, and the more consistent he got.”
Have Cooper finalized his offseason plans? LaFleur suggested that he won’t waste much time and get back to work right away.
“It’s going to be a great offseason for him. I think he’s planning on staying in town. Hopefully we can get him bigger, faster and stronger.”
The problem now is that Campanile has moved on the Jacksonville Jaguars. Can Cooper produce the same kind of game with a new linebackers coach?
