The Green Bay Packers‘ offense, and the passing game in particular, was dealt a significant blow when playmaking wide receiver Christian Watson was lost for the season with a torn ACL during Sunday’s 27-25 heartbreaking Week 18 loss to the Chicago Bears.
While the Packers’ wide receiving corps has adopted a next-man-up mentality for the better part of two seasons, with the likes of Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Romeo Doubs, each seemingly alternating as quarterback Jordan Love‘s favorite target, the loss of Watson this postseason–and beyond, could prove significant.
After all, Watson caught 29 passes for a career-high 620 yards and two touchdowns, while averaging a whopping 21.4 yards per reception in 15 games this season.
Beginning Sunday in Philadelphia, against the Eagles in the NFC Wild Card round, Watson’s fellow receivers believe they have a simple plan to help pick up the slack. Start fast, right out of the chute.
“We always say we go as a team or the team (goes) as we go,” Wicks said, of the receiver room, via the Packers’ official website. “Receivers gotta get off to a fast start, a hot start. If we get off to a fast start, the offense starts fast.”
