The Green Bay Packers made the decision to move on from kicker Anders Carlson after he struggled both all of last season and during training camp this year. They also decided to cut ties with his replacement, Brayden Narveson, after just six weeks and more inconsistency from the kicker position.
Eventually, and thankfully, Green Bay eventually settled on Brandon McManus to be their kicker. In eight games with the Packers, McManus has made 93.3% of his field goal tries and 100% of his extra point attempts.
After over a year of uncertainty at the kicker position, the Packers finally have a reliable player at the position. Carlson, meanwhile, showed today why Green Bay was so willing to move on from him after just one season.
Former Packers Kicker Anders Carlson Struggled for the Jets in Their Loss to the Rams
After being cut by Green Bay, Carlson tried out for several NFL teams before landing a temporary starting job with the San Francisco 49ers. In two games with San Francisco, Carlson made all five of his field goal attempts, but missed one of his four extra point kicks.
When Jake Moody returned from injury, Carlson was released by the 49ers. He ended up signing with the New York Jets and became their starting kicker after an injury to Greg Zuerlein. Heading into play on Sunday, he had made seven of his eight field goal attempts and nine of 10 extra point tries.
But, as the case seems to be for New York this year, the wheels came off at the worst time imaginable.
Aaron Rodgers connected with Davante Adams early in the first quarter on a touchdown pass that capped off a 99-yard drive. Carlson, though, missed the extra point attempt. Later in the game, with the Jets desperately in need of points, he badly missed a 49-yard field goal wide right.
Former Packers Kicker Anders Carlson Gets Dragged on Social Media
New York fell to Los Angeles 16-9 and dropped to 4-11 on the season. While Carlson was not the reason they lost, his performance certainly did not help.
Throughout the game, both Packers and Jets fans and beat writers piled on the criticism of the former sixth round pick:

Aaron Rodgers just threw a beautiful TD pass to Davante Adams and Anders Carlson just missed the extra point.
That was most Packers thing the Jets have ever had before

Anders Carlson essentially kicks the way Wild Thing pitched before getting glasses. https://t.co/9GiHg3nDHb

Okay… and the Anders Carlson experiment is a rap.
The crop of Kickers in this league have never been weaker mentally.
The old days… a guy misses a kick, they refocus, and kick for years after.
Now… they miss 1, their brains short circuit so they miss 2, and then snowball…

Anders Carlson wasn’t even close on that FG.
He miiiight not be the guy.

At this point in the season, it is not like New York has many options at kicker. The reality is that Carlson will likely finish the season there, but will probably be looking for yet another new job in 2025.
