The Green Bay Packers wished linebacker Jonathan Garvin a happy birthday Friday. In a stark contradiction to the morning wish, the Packers announced they were cutting the former seventh-round pick a few hours later. The unfortunate timing of the cut went viral on social media Friday.
The Packers selected Garvin in the 2020 draft. He appeared in 38 games but started in just one for the Packers. Per Zachary Jacobson, Garvin wasn’t a good fit for the Packers when they moved him to defensive end this summer.
Releasing Jonathan Garvin on his birthday is rough, but from a football standpoint, probably necessary. The Packers moved him from OLB to DE in the first practice of camp, and evidently didn’t need long to determine that it just wasn’t working out.

Still, because the Packers’ PR team wished him a happy birthday on social media, cutting him a few hours later seemed…cruel.
But that’s business in the NFL.
