As many questions as the Green Bay Packers have to find out the answers to regarding Jordan Love, there is one thing for certain: he is the starting quarterback. When the Packers drafted Sean Clifford in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, many assumed that he was on the inside track to be Love’s backup.
After all, that is the formula the Packers followed when Aaron Rodgers took over as the starter in 2008. They used a second round pick on quarterback Brian Brohm (oops) and a seventh round pick on Matt Flynn.
However, based on reports coming from training camp, Clifford has not been the one taking snaps with the backup offense. It has been 2022 practice squad holdover Danny Etling.
Will Danny Etling Be the Green Bay Packers Backup Quarterback to Jordan Love
Paul Bretl of PackersWire reported:
“Since training camp began a week ago, Danny Etling has been the Packers’ backup quarterback, leading the second-team offense each day. Sean Clifford and Alex McGough, meanwhile, have been splitting reps with the third-team offense.”
It is very intriguing that Etling is taking the second-string snaps despite the Packers taking Clifford in the fifth round. There may, however, be an explanation that does not end with Etling as the backup.
As mentioned, Etling is a holdover from the 2022 practice squad. Clifford, meanwhile, is a rookie with just a few months of exposure to the Matt LaFleur offense. If the Packers want to get a better understanding of what they have in potential second-string offensive players, it would make sense that the quarterback with more experience in the offense gets those snaps.
That being said, Bretl does share the possibility that Green Bay takes three quarterbacks onto their 53-man roster. The last time the Packers kept three quarterbacks on the roster was in 2016, when they had Rodgers, Brett Hundley, and Joe Callahan.
Of course, if the Packers were to take three quarterbacks, that would mean another position group would lose depth. In 2016, when they took three quarterbacks onto the roster, they also took seven wide receivers. As a result, they only carried eight offensive linemen onto the 53-man roster.
Given the injury history on the offensive line, it is hard to see the team taking that few. That being said, it is impossible to see them taking as many as seven wide receivers this year.
In any case, the backup quarterback role is certainly an intriguing position battle to watch. The combined practices and preseason games will be vital in determining who will end up with the role.
