Even though he hasn’t had a lot of mileage in the league yet, Milwaukee Bucks rookie AJ Johnson is making it a point to learn everything he can to become better. This can be seen in a recent decision he made during the offseason.
In the 2024 NBA Draft, the Milwaukee Bucks selected 6-foot-5 guard AJ Johnson with the 23rd overall pick. General Manager Jon Horst expressed enthusiasm about adding Johnson to the roster for the upcoming season. The 19-year-old, originally from Fresno, California, played for the Illawarra Hawks in the Australian National Basketball League.
Johnson’s journey took him from a potential career at Kanye West’s Donda Academy to finishing high school at Southern California Academy after the school closed. Although he initially committed to the University of Texas, he opted to turn pro instead. His time in Australia was limited, averaging just over two points in under eight minutes per game. However, Horst noted that despite these challenges, Johnson demonstrated elite speed, mental toughness, and an ability to adapt.
Johnson attended the draft at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, where he felt a strong connection with the Bucks during his pre-draft workouts and interviews. He indicated that the team showed genuine interest in his development.
Milwaukee Bucks Rookie AJ Johnson Hones Craft With Kevin Durant, Chet Holmgren, and Other NBA Stars
In an effort to prepare for his first NBA season, Johnson was seen working out with other stars in the league. This can be seen in an article written by Cody Smith for Sports Illustrated.
“One month from training camp for the 2024-25 NBA season, Milwaukee Bucks rookie AJ Johnson has been attending an unofficial summer orientation with some of his basketball elders.
The 6-foot-4 Johnson, the 23rd overall selection in the June NBA Draft, is one of the lightest newcomers at 167 pounds.
During recent scrimmages in California, Johnson tested his slender frame against NBA stars Kevin Durant, Chet Holmgren, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, Jordan Clarkson and Jalen Green,” Smith wrote.
The guard has been participating in informal workouts in California, where he showcased his abilities against established players. Despite a challenging rookie season in the NBL with the Illawarra Hawks, where he averaged 2.9 points per game, Johnson is eager to prove himself.
His recent performances, including impressive plays against top defenders, suggest he’s ready to make an impact as he prepares for training camp soon. In any case, Bucks fans will be eager to see if Johnson can live up to expectations soon.
