Former Milwaukee Brewers star infielder Willy Adames has a new home in the big leagues. After three-plus seasons with the Brewers, Adames is set to play for his third MLB team after he landed a seven-year, $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants this December.
Adames was easily one of the biggest names in MLB free agency, which also means he’s a significant loss for the Brewers. While his stay with Milwaukee remains memorable for both parties, he will be sporting a different number with the Giants. From No. 27, Adames will be wearing No. 2 — the same number as his childhood hero and former New York Yankees superstar shortstop Derek Jeter.
Fans react to Willy Adames’ jersey number announcement
Adames shared the number change via his Instagram account, with his post immediately garnering a ton of reactions.

“thank you sm willy for everything you did for us we love you and we will dearly miss you, i love you willy can’t wait to see you soon, go brewers 😢❤️,” a Brewers fan said.
“LETS GO WILLY!!!” another fan said.
From a different commenter: “Not a happy camper! We will miss you @willy2802 ! Might have to get me a @sfgiants jersey!!”
“#1 would’ve been fire but I get why for #2 still 🔥” chimed in an Instagram user.
Via another IG user: “LFG!! Time to go to work!”
The Giants have the No. 27 jersey number retired in honor of nine-time All-Star Juan Marichal, hence the move for Adames to go with a different digit on his uniform.
In what turned out to be his final season with the Brewers, Adames hit .251/.331/.462 with 32 home runs and 112 RBIs to go with a 118 OPS+.
