The Milwaukee Brewers knew that they were not likely going to be able to re-sign shortstop Willy Adames once he hit free agency. Because of this, many fans and analysts believed that he would be traded prior to the 2024 season, just as Corbin Burnes was traded to the Baltimore Orioles. However, seeing value in holding onto a player of Adames’ character and leadership on such a young team, the Brewers decided to hold onto him.
Of course, Adames had one of the best seasons by a shortstop in franchise history in his final year with the team. He hit .251/.331/.462 with 32 home runs, 112 RBI, and 21 stolen bases and set the MLB record for the most three-run home runs in a season.
As expected, Milwaukee was not able to compete with bigger markets when he hit the open market. He signed a seven-year $182 million contract with the San Francisco Giants earlier this offseason.
Former Milwaukee Brewers Shortstop Willy Adames Predicted to Make His First All-Star Team with the San Francisco Giants
In a recent article post by Bleacher Report, MLB analyst Joel Reuter named Adames as the most-likely MLB player who will make his first career All-Star team in 2025 after years of getting overlooked with the small market Brewers:
“The San Francisco Giants signed Willy Adames to a seven-year, $182 million deal in early December, adding some much-needed star power to a lineup that has been lacking a true face of the franchise since Buster Posey retired.
“The 29-year-old has posted four straight 3-WAR seasons, emerging as one of the best two-way shortstops in baseball during his time with the Milwaukee Brewers.
“He set career-high marks in hits (153), doubles (33), home runs (32), RBI (112) and steals (21) in 2024, and even if his offensive numbers take a step backward, he is still long overdue for an All-Star nod.”
Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio and former prospect Lucas Erceg also were named on the list of 16 potential first-time All-Stars.
Now that he is playing in a bigger market and has signed the richest contract in Giants franchise history, Adames will almost certainly get more attention from fan voters than he did when he was playing in Milwaukee.
An argument could be made that he deserved to be in All-Star in at least two of the last three seasons, so hopefully he does get the recognition that he has earned in 2025.
