The Milwaukee Brewers have made another MiLB signing, this time bringing back a player who began the off-season on their 40-man roster. Returning to the Crew is reliever Tyler Jay.
Jay, a former first round pick by the Minnesota Twins, made three appearances with the Brewers a season ago. He was acquired last July from the New York Mets in exchange for RHP TJ Shook.
Why did the Milwaukee Brewers lose Tyler Jay earlier this off-season?
In January, the Brewers signed RHP Grant Anderson to a MLB deal. Jay ended up being the 40-man roster casualty and was subsequently claimed off of waivers by the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners then tried to outright him, Jay declined a minor league assignment, and re-signed with Milwaukee on a MiLB deal.
What to expect from Tyler Jay in 2025?
On the mound, Jay throws a sinker, cutter, and sweeper. His fastball averages around 92-93 MPH. He’s familiarity with the Brewers organization is a plus, but pending any spring training injuries he will have to earn his way back up to the big leagues.
A season ago Jared Koenig joined the organization on a MiLB deal and ended up playing a pivotal role in the Brewers success. That’s not to say Jay will do the same, but Milwaukee has had good luck taking fliers on talented southpaws in the past with Bryan Hudson being another example.
