The Milwaukee Brewers have won seven games in a row following their thrilling 3-2 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night. Starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff rebounded from allowing two solo home runs in the first two innings to have arguably his best game since returning from the shoulder injury that cost him nearly two years.
For the first time since he threw a complete game shutout on September 11, 2023, Woodruff completed seven innings of work, allowing just three hits, two runs, and two walks while striking out eight. Meanwhile, the Brewers Murph-balled their way to outscoring their opponent once again, scoring three runs in the fifth inning despite only having one hit.
Center fielder Blake Perkins reached on an error, then Brice Turang smashed a two-run home run to tie the game. After a Caleb Durbin pop out, Joey Ortiz walked, Sal Frelick reached base on catcher’s interference, and William Contreras walked. With the bases loaded, Isaac Collins was hit by a pitch, driving in the go-ahead run.
The Milwaukee Brewers Won on a Walk-Off Outfield Assist from Blake Perkins

After getting two home runs off of Woodruff early in the game, offense was hard to come by for the Mets, who have now lost five games in a row. They only were able to get on base three more times against him while he was still in, and Abner Uribe only allowed one walk in an otherwise dominant eighth inning.
But New York made some noise off of All-Star closer Trevor Megill in the ninth inning. With two outs, Starling Marte, who had hit a solo home run earlier in the game, laced a double to right center field. Then, still with two outs, Jeff McNeil singled to shallow center.
Marte was sent home by the third base coach for what would have been the game-tying run. But Perkins threw a perfect dart home, one-hopping the throw to Contreras who applied the tag for the third and final out of the game:

With the victory, the Brewers improved to 71-44 on the season. With the Chicago Cubs losing 5-0 to the St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee now has a five-game lead in the National League Central Division.

Megill, of course, benefited from Perkins’ outstanding throw because he was credited with the save, his 26th of the season. But it was not lost on him how much the dynamic centerfielder helped him out while doing so:

“I mean, I saw the ball of the bat and thought ‘Oh sh–,’ that’s about it. I just did my job and got behind home in case anything happened there. And, I mean, an absolute dime of throw. It is the second time he’s picked me up here with the Brewers now. Always exciting when something like that happens behind you.”
Last season, in a game against the Cincinnati Reds, Perkins gunned down a would-be game-tying run at the plate in the ninth inning to clinch the win for Milwaukee. Megill was on the mound when that happened as well, which is why he said it was the second time Perkins has picked him up.
