Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy revealed that one of his Opening Day roster spots will go to a 31 year old pitcher who has never made an Opening Day roster before. This pitcher signed a minor league deal with the Crew last year and debuted with the team in September. He held a 40-man roster spot all winter and now will be in the bullpen on March 28 against the New York Mets.
Thyago Vieira has made the Milwaukee Brewers Opening Day roster.

According to Curt Hogg at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the plan is for Thyago Vieira to make the Opening Day roster. Hogg indicated that he learned this information from manager Pat Murphy.
It is looking like Thyago Vieira will make the team, Pat Murphy said this morning.

How did Thyago Vieira perform during the 2023 season?

Thyago Vieira had a very small MLB sample size in 2023 that consisted of two appearances and three total innings pitched in which he did not allow a run. In the minor leagues he pitched at the Triple-A level and had a 3.35 ERA across 37.2 innings pitched. The Nashville Sounds used him in high leverage spots and he recorded eight saves a season ago.
Thyago Vieira has not had an easy path back to the big leagues.

In 2010 Thyago Vieira signed with the Seattle Mariners. He was dealt to the Chicago White Sox for cash in 2017, but was a top 20 prospect in both organizations. Good velocity and high strikeout numbers was his calling card but command hindered him early on and in 2020 he elected to play overseas. He played in Japan for three seasons before latching on with the Brewers for the 2023 season.
With Milwaukee in 2024 Vieira will be one pitcher with a short leash. As mentioned he does not have a track record of MLB success and he also has no minor league options left. Getting results early on will be important for him if he wants to remain on the Brewers 26-man roster.
