With the signing of Luke Voit to a minor-league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, there is another option for the Crew at the cold corner. Let’s examine the possible effect.
First base is an important position for any baseball team. Look what the Cardinals have done since the acquisition of Paul Goldschmidt in 2018 or the importance of Joey Votto being in the lineup for the Reds. Power and defense define first base.
The Brewers acquired Rowdy Tellez in on July 6, 2021. Since that acquisition, Rowdy has hit 42 HRs, drove in 117, and posted an OPS of just below .800, while playing defense at a .995 FP. Numbers only expected to improve in 2023.
Rowdy’s splits are very dynamic.
vs LH 4 HR’s (of 35), 11 RBI (of 89), and an OPS of .644 (2022 in 115 AB)
vs RH 31 HR’s (of 35), 78 RBI (of 89), and an OPS of .801 (2022 in 414 AB)
FP .995
Clearly Rowdy has the biggest impact against right-handed starters, but what effect can Luke Voit have on the Brewers lineup, assuming he makes the team.
Luke’s splits are equally dynamic but completely opposite.
vs LH 25 HR’s (of 95), 75 RBI (of 272), and an OPS of .768 (Career in 462 AB)
vs RH 70 HR’s (of 95), 197 RBI (of 272), and an OPS of .838 (Career in 1,150 AB)
FB .989
When looking at these statistics, Luke has been a much better hitter against right-handed starting pitchers that left-handed starting pitchers even though he is a right-handed hitter.
While the signing of Luke Voit, albeit, to a minor league contract doesn’t impact the Brewers roster during Spring Training, if he were to make the team, his effect on the roster overall would be negligible as he hits better against righties and is a right-handed hitter himself. That’s already covered with Rowdy Tellez.
