The Milwaukee Brewers love nasty pitchers. Nasty, in this sense, is referring to pitchers who may not always have the best results on the mound, but certain characteristics of their pitches stand out. Matt Arnold and company will find these players, plug them into the pitching lab, give them some targeted adjustments, and then wait and see what happens.
In this article, we take a look at a statistic called Stuff+, which is a way of quantifying which pitchers have the nastiest pitches in the game.
Stuff+ is a statistic that tries to capture the nastiest pitches in baseball
Three Milwaukee Brewers pitchers rank among the top 25 in Stuff+
Using last year’s data, Milwaukee relievers Trevor Megill, Abner Uribe, and Nick Mears all rank within the top 25 in Stuff+. Megill came in at ninth, Uribe 11th, and Mears 23rd. Former Brewers also were seen on this list with Devin Williams coming in at 10th and Josh Hader 24th.
Big fastballs are a theme with these three relievers
One area Stuff+ focuses on is velocity, in which Megill and Uribe are capable of hitting triple digits multiple times in an outing. Mears is not quite at that level, but he did average 96.7 MPH on his heater a season ago. His fastball differs from the other two in that its movement is driven by spin rate. Baseball savant says 98% of his fastball movement derives from the spin.
It is not a coincidence that all of these relievers were used late in games/high leverage situations last year. Megill ran away with the closer role, Uribe started off having ninth inning duties but a knee injury ended his season prematurely, and Mears, who was a trade deadline acquisition, saw late game action during the Wild Card series.
