The Milwaukee Brewers are entering their second year with Pat Murphy as their manager. He has been with the team since 2016, when Craig Counsell brought him in to be his bench coach, but the culture Murphy has instilled feels collegiate as players come in hungry to play and compete everyday.
A season ago, Murphy had the Brewers running wild. They had the second most stolen bases in Major League Baseball (MLB) with 217 and got contributions from everyone on the bases. The idea of being an aggressive base stealing team started last spring training and so far things have been no different this year.
This spring, the Milwaukee Brewers are tied for the most stolen bases in MLB

Entering play on March 9, the Brewers are tied for the most stolen bases in MLB with 25. Only the Kansas City Royals have matched them, but they have also played one extra game. 15 different players have stolen a base for Milwaukee, with Jackson Chourio, Sal Frelick, and Joey Ortiz leading the pack with three a piece.
The Brewers have hit the most home runs of any team this spring

Another category Milwaukee is excelling in is the long ball. Their 25 home runs this spring are the most in the league. Rhys Hoskins and Vinny Capra are leading the charge with four each. Caleb Durbin is the only other player with more than one home run as he has clobbered two.

Will this translate into the regular season?

Being a young and athletic team, the Brewers are once again expected to be one of the best base stealing teams. Five players had 20 or more stolen bases in 2024, with Brice Turang leading the charge with 50. Expect Turang, Blake Perkins (23 stolen bases in 2024), Jackson Chourio, (22 stolen bases), and Christian Yelich (21 stolen bases) to all be active on the bases again, but Sal Frelick (18 stolen bases) and Garrett Mitchell (11 stolen bases) should also see increases in their totals from a season ago.
Power wise, Milwaukee finished in the middle of the pack last year and that will likely be the case again in 2025. Yes, they lost power hitting shortstop Willy Adames, but the Brewers can make up for the home runs lost if Christian Yelich and Garrett Mitchell stay healthy, Rhys Hoskins bounces back, and if Jackson Chourio takes a leap forward by inserting his name into the MVP race.
