Last year, Milwaukee Brewers rookie southpaw Robert Gasser impressed through five MLB starts, tossing 28.0 innings, having a 2.57 ERA, and going at least six innings on three occasions. Unfortunately, his elbow became an issue and Tommy John surgery was required.
On June 24, 2024, Gasser underwent Tommy John surgery. The Brewers placed his expected timeline to return around late August/early September. He now has reached an important milestone in his recovery that supports him being on this track.
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Robert Gasser has began an injury rehab assignment

In what will be a long road to getting built back up, 26 year old Gasser has officially begun his injury rehab assignment back from Tommy John surgery. He was assigned to the Arizona Complex League Brewers and already has an outing underneath his belt.
In his first game since surgery, Gasser threw a nine pitch scoreless inning where he gave up one hit. He then later picked that batter off. Per reports, he topped out around 93 MPH. For reference, his four-seam fastball averaged 93.6 MPH last year and his sinker 92.6 MPH.
Robert Gasser will only improve the Brewers starting pitching depth

With Gasser expected to be ready to return to the big leagues this season, the Brewers already strong starting pitching depth is set to improve. Things could change with the trade deadline looming, but with Freddy Peralta, Jacob Misiorowski, Quinn Priester, Jose Quintana, and Brandon Woodruff already established in the rotation, Gasser may find himself in a DL Hall or Aaron Ashby type of role.
One serious question the Brewers have to answer is if they even want to bring him back to the big leagues this year? Results from pitchers pitchers after Tommy John seem to be better in year two, so 2026 in Gasser’s case, as opposed to year one.
A lot can happen between now and when Gasser is actually ready to return, but eventually Milwaukee may need to weigh short-term use against long-term development as they consider the best path forward.
