“We Had This Coming;” Milwaukee Brewers Manager Pat Murphy Gets 100% Honest After Loss to Lowly Rockies

The Milwaukee Brewers failed to pick up a game on the first place Chicago Cubs, who lost on Sunday, by dropping their final game of their three-game weekend series against the lowly Colorado Rockies. While Sal Frelick and Christian Yelich gave the team a 2-0 lead with solo home runs in the sixth inning, the bullpen could not hold the lead.

A Joey Ortiz throwing error allowed Ryan McMahon to get to second base with two outs in the eighth inning. Long-time Brewers killer Brenton Doyle, who is hitting .193 this season, then hit an RBI double to trim Milwaukee’s lead to 2-1.

In the bottom of the ninth, again with two outs, former Brewers shortstop Orlando Arcia hit a game-tying solo home run off of closer Trevor Megill.

After trading runs in the 10th inning, Colorado was able to push their ghost runner across in the 11th while Milwaukee failed to do so in their half of the inning, falling to the Rockies by the score of 4-3.

Milwaukee Brewers Manager Pat Murphy Says His Team Had It Coming

The Rockies are currently on course to be the worst team in Major League Baseball history. Their victory over the Brewers on Sunday “improved” their record to 19-65 on the season. For some reason, Milwaukee’s hitters were unable to get good contact off of Colorado starter German Marquez, who entered the day with a 5.79 ERA.

In baseball, mistakes simply cannot be made if a team is to win consistently. On Sunday, Ortiz’s error (which happened on a really tough play) and Megill’s meatball to Arcia proved to be the difference makers.

And manager Pat Murphy was not shy about what he thought about his squad’s performance as a whole on Sunday.

“We had this coming to us,” the 2024 NL Manager of the Year said (according to Todd Rosiak). “What I mean by that is, things have been going our way a bunch. We haven’t had games like this in a while, so it’s a good reminder that you can lose these games. You’ve got to play every pitch.”

The Brewers have one of the best records in baseball over the past month. They have been playing great and making very few mistakes. This loss is a reminder that they are still young and need to be focused on every pitch every day.

Milwaukee will look to bounce back from the loss when they start a road trip by visiting the New York Mets, who were just swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates and outscored 30-4 in the series.
