The Milwaukee Brewers’ offseason has been very quiet other than losing shortstop Willy Adames to the San Francisco Giants in free agency. Milwaukee has won the National League Central for the last two seasons and they are looking to win it for a third consecutive year in 2025.
It is going to be interesting to see who will replace Adames in the lineup for the 2025 MLB season. One team that the Brewers could make a trade with before the 2025 MLB season is the New York Mets.
Reviewingthebrew.com Writer David Gasper Thinks That the Milwaukee Brewers Should Trade For New York Mets Third Baseman Brett Baty Ahead Of the 2025 MLB Season
Reviewingthebrew.com writer David Gasper wrote about four different players who the Milwaukee Brewers could trade for before the start of the 2025 MLB season. One player who could potentially upgrade the Brewers infield in a trade is New York Mets third baseman Brett Baty.
Baty was mentioned in trade rumors before the 2024 MLB trade deadline. There is still a chance that the Mets could trade him away to another team before the start of the 2025 MLB season. Gasper said:
“It’s clear the New York Mets have found an everyday player in Mark Vientos, who just so happens to play the same position as another highly touted former prospect in Brett Baty. That means Baty is a change of scenery candidate looking for a spot he can earn a starting job long-term, because it won’t be at third base in New York. That is, unless Pete Alonso leaves.
The trade market for Brett Baty probably won’t crystallize until Pete Alonso signs. If Alonso returns to the Mets, Vientos is locked in at third base, pushing Baty out of a potential job. If Alonso leaves New York, then Vientos can be moved to first base and Baty can take the everyday job at third. Should Alonso go back to Queens, the Brewers should immediately call their former GM in David Stearns and try to figure out a deal for Baty.
Baty has not had great big league numbers so far in his career, debuting in 2022. In just over 500 MLB at-bats, Baty has a .215/.282/.325 slash line with 15 homers and an OPS+ of 70. While not ideal, Baty has put up fantastic numbers in the minor leagues and a change of scenery would likely do him wonders.
Baty still has five seasons of team control remaining with just over one year of MLB service time. That’s the kind of long-term team control the Brewers tend to prioritize with their additions and could make him an ideal fit in Milwaukee.
Just 25 years old, Baty fits the youth that the Brewers have on their roster. While not a stolen base threat like most of the young Brewers, Baty provides power from the hot corner and would allow Ortiz to completely shift over to shortstop.
While long term control over a former highly touted prospect usually comes at a high cost, Baty’s value is at a low point and if the Brewers believe they can unlock his offensive potential, they could make a swing for him.”
It appears that the Mets may not have any long-term plans for him. They could move him over to second base, but Jeff McNeil and Luisangel Acuna could very well be splitting time at second base in 2025. A change of scenery could benefit Brett Baty for the long haul. Last season with New York, he had a .229 batting average with four home runs and 16 RBIs, along with zero stolen bases, a .306 on-base percentage, and a .327 slugging percentage.
Moving Joey Ortiz To Shortstop
If Milwaukee were to trade for third baseman Brett Baty, the first move for the Milwaukee Brewers would then be to move Joey Ortiz from third baseman to shortstop. There is a chance that Ortiz will be the starting shortstop for the Brewers in 2025.
Trading for Baty would be a good move for this franchise. He has talent, but a team needs to allow him to be an everyday player since the Mets are probably not the best place for him to showcase his talent.
