Milwaukee Brewers General Manager Matt Arnold made a lot of transactions during the 2024 calendar year. Here, we take a look at his nine biggest moves that will be reviewed in chronological order. It’s important to note that some significant moves, such as Jackson Chourio’s record-breaking contract extension, the signing of Jared Koenig, and the trade of Tyrone Taylor and Adrian Houser, all took place in 2023.
Five moves that Matt Arnold made prior to the start of the Milwaukee Brewers 2024 regular season.
- Acquired LHP Bryan Hudson in exchange for LHP Justin Chambers (January 3, 2024)
- Signed 1B Rhys Hoskins to a contract (January 26, 2024)
- Acquired LHP DL Hall, INF Joey Ortiz, and 2024 Competitive Balance Round-A draft pick in exchange for RHP Corbin Burnes (February 1, 2024)
- Signed RHP Jakob Junis to a contract (February 7, 2024)
- Signed RHP Brandon Woodruff to a contract (February 21, 2024)
Of these five transactions, the acquisitions of Bryan Hudson and Joey Ortiz proved to be the most impactful on the field. While Rhys Hoskins didn’t meet the offensive expectations set in previous years, he still brought an immediate spark to the team with his leadership. Unfortunately, DL Hall, Jakob Junis, and Brandon Woodruff all battled injuries in 2024. Hall and Woodruff are expected to have significant roles with the team in 2025, while Junis was traded mid-season
Three moves that Matt Arnold made mid-season
- Acquired RHP Aaron Civale from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for SS Gregory Barrios (July 3, 2024)
- Acquired RHP Nick Mears from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for RHP Bradley Blalock and Yujanyer Herrera (July 27, 2024)
- Acquired RHP Frankie Montas from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for RHP Jakob Junis, OF Joey Wiemer, and cash (July 30, 2024)
In July, Matt Arnold executed a deal more than three weeks before the trade deadline that netted them Aaron Civale. He later further bolstered the pitching staff by adding reliever Nick Mears and starter Frankie Montas. Of this group, Montas is the only player who has since departed.
One significant move that Matt Arnold has made this off-season
- Acquired LHP Nestor Cortes, INF Caleb Durbin, and cash from the New York Yankees in exchange for RHP Devin Williams (December 13, 2024)
Matt Arnold has made one major move this off-season and that is when he traded away Devin Williams in exchange for Nestor Cortes and Caleb Durbin. It will be interesting to see how this trade pans out for each side, but from the Brewers perspective it appears that they received a veteran starting pitcher as well as a versatile infielder who will be competing for a MLB spot in 2025.
