The Milwaukee Brewers had a season-ending press conference with the media on Thursday. General manager Matt Arnold spoke about many different topics, including Devin Williams.
Williams this season for the Brewers had 14 saves. In 21.2 innings pitched, he gave up 10 hits and three runs. His ERA was 1.25 and had a 0.97 WHIP. Devin Williams only walked 11 batters and struck out 38 batters.
Milwaukee Brewers General Manager Matt Arnold Backs Closer Devin Williams Despite Postseason Disappointment
The Brewers had a 2-0 lead in Game 3 against the New York Mets in the Top of the 9th inning in the wild-card round. Williams was the closer in the game for Milwaukee, but he gave up a three-run homer to Pete Alonso in the ninth inning and the Brewers lost that game 4-2.
The New York Mets advanced to the NLDS and just beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 in the series. They will await the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres series winner. Milwaukee Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said about Devin Williams:
“One moment shouldn’t define Devin. I still believe he’s the best closer in baseball, and I’m happy to have him.”
He will be the closer in 2025 with the way he performed during the 2024 regular season. Hopefully, Williams will have a good start and not a bad start next year.

Translation: when we trade him it’s still gotta be for good prospects.

It is highly unlikely that the Brewers would trade the closer in the offseason. However, there will be other decisions that general manager Matt Arnold will have to make with the roster this offseason. Devin Williams should be the least of their worries right now.
