The Milwaukee Brewers entered 2025 Spring Training with several veterans that they had signed to minor league contracts with invitations to Big League camp. These included notable players like Jake Bauers, Mark Canha, and Manuel Margot.
Bauers, of course, was on the team last year and hit .199/.301/.361 with 12 home runs and 43 RBI. Canha, who played for the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants last season, was brought in for the second time. He previously played for Milwaukee following a mid-season trade in 2023. Margot, who spent 2024 with the Twins, was brought in to compete in an already crowded outfield.
On Friday, the Brewers reportedly informed these veterans of where they stood going into the regular season. And apparently Canha did not like their plans for him.
The Milwaukee Brewers Have Traded Mark Canha to the Kansas City Royals

Canha signed with the Brewers again following a season that saw him hit .242/.344/.346 with seven home runs and 46 RBI for the Tigers and Giants. In his half season with Milwaukee prior to that, he hit .287/.373/.427 with five home runs and 33 RBI.
When he signed with the Brewers again, manager Pat Murphy told reporters that the team viewed him as a possible right-handed bat in the outfield and at designated hitter.
Apparently, though, he had not done enough to overtake some of the younger talent on Milwaukee’s roster. On Friday evening, after the team informed the veterans of their plans for the upcoming season, Canha was traded to the Kansas City Royals:

The news of the trade was a bit of a surprise. Many assumed that he would make the Opening Day roster due to his positional versatility. Throughout his Big League career, he has played every position except for pitcher, catcher, and second base.
Milwaukee Brewers Fans Were Not Happy to See Mark Canha Traded

While fans are excited about the young stars that the Brewers have, there was quite a high level of disappointment in seeing Canha traded (again):

It will be interesting to see if any of the other veterans on minor league contracts make the Opening Day roster. Bauers can play in the outfield and was on the team last year (as mentioned). Margot, however, provides more athleticism on defense in the outfield, but has a history of injuries.
Milwaukee will receive a player to be named later for Canha.
