The Milwaukee Brewers have made another under the radar signing as they have signed 6’3″ southpaw Josh Maciejewski in free agency. He formerly pitched for the New York Yankees, making his MLB debut a season ago. One thing he will have in common with other players in the organization is that he has a fascinating changeup.
Josh Maciejewski career statistics with the New York Yankees
Maciejewski has previously spent his entire career in the Yankees organization as he was a 10th round draft selection in 2018. He spent less than a month’s time in the big leagues last year, appearing in four games, covering 7.0 innings, and having a 2.57 ERA. Throughout his professional career, he has a 4.00 ERA in the minor leagues. He has operated both as a starter and reliever, with the bulk of his appearances coming as a multi-inning bullpen option.
The Milwaukee Brewers have to be fascinated with Josh Maciejewski’s changeup
Devin Williams and Craig Yoho are the two extreme examples of Brewers players in recent memory who have changeups unlike anyone else. Maciejewski’s changeup does not have as much movement as Williams and Yoho, but it’s still pretty good and the pitch is coming from a left-handed hurler as opposed to a righty.
Baseball savant gives Maciejewski’s 38.4 in of vertical drop and 16.9 in of arm side movement whereas Williams is at 42.3 in of vertical drop and 19.4 in of arm side movement. Additionally, last year (small sample size) he gave up just two hits on the changeup while generating whiffs at a 30% rate. When not getting swings and misses, Maciejewski tends to generate a lot of ground balls and he excels at painting the outside corner with either a sinker or slider to right-handed batters.

Contract details
According to Ari Alexander of KPRC 2, this is a minor league contract. No word on whether or not this includes an invitation to big league camp, but given the fact he was in the big leagues last year that seems like a real possibility.
Regardless, Maciejewski will be one interesting player to follow as he is joining the Brewers already having an elite changeup that he throws as his primary pitch. It will be interesting to see if he can breakout with Milwaukee and make it back to the big leagues.
