The Milwaukee Brewers are 64-44 despite their 10-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. By winning the home series two games to three, the Brewers ensured that they are now one game ahead of the Cubs in the National League Central Division. They also have the best record in all of baseball.
But as the calendar turns from July to August, and fans look at Doc’s MLB picks to figure out what to expect, the push for the postseason is going to intensify. The 2025 MLB trade deadline will pass on Wednesday, with baseball’s biggest contenders and playoff hopefuls restocked and loaded for a race to October.
The Brewers have the day off on Thursday, but will resume play on Thursday, handing the ball to veteran left-handed starter Jose Quintana to continue their marathon race to another division title.
The Milwaukee Brewers Need Jose Quintana to Avoid His August Slump

On Thursday, Quintana and the Brewers will take on the Washington Nationals, who are 44-64 and have traded multiple players away ahead of the deadline in an effort to reload for the future. Milwaukee previously swept Washington as part of their 6-0 homestand heading into the 2025 MLB All-Star Break.
Thursday is also August 1, the start of a month that has been a bit of a struggle for Quintana over the course of his career. According to Statmuse, in 72 career appearances during that particular month, the 14-year veteran is 20-20 with a 4.00 ERA.
So far this season, Quintana is 7-4 with a 3.50 ERA in 15 starts. Earlier this season, he became the first Brewers pitcher since CC Sabathia to win his first four starts with Milwaukee. However, he has struggled with high pitch counts in nearly each of his last 10 starts, and has seen his ERA increase from 2.65 to 3.50 in that time.
Fortunately, Quintana does have a history of success against the Nationals in his career, which bodes well for the Brewers on Thursday. In eight career appearances against Washington, he is 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA.
Other Milwaukee Brewers Probable Pitchers vs the Washington Nationals

While Quintana will get the ball on Friday, the Brewers are turning to a pair of All-Star starters to help them clinch the series on Saturday and Sunday.
Brandon Woodruff, who has been dominant since his return from a shoulder injury that cost him nearly two seasons, will take the ball on Saturday. He is 2-0 with a 2.01 ERA on the season.
Rookie phenom and 2025 NL All-Star Jacob Misiorowski will look to bounce back from a rough outing against the Chicago Cubs in his last start by taking the mound on Sunday. He is 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA on the season.
