Former Milwaukee Brewers Devin Williams let the New York Yankees down again. On Friday night, Williams imploded anew on the mound, as he failed to silence the Houston Astros in extra innings. Williams allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits in an inning of work. He gave up a single RBI to Carlos Correa that broke up a tie in the top of the 10th inning before giving up a two-run home run to Taylor Trammell.
The Yankees still had a shot to win the game or at least tie the score in the bottom of the 10th frame, but they also mustered a run, as they absorbed a 5-3 victory.
Baseball insider Jon Heyman didn’t hide his thoughts on Williams’ latest debacle, as he appeared to blame Yankees manager Aaron Boone for the decision to go with the struggling closer.
Wrote Heyman in a post on X: “It’s not Devin Williams’ fault. Under no circumstance should he have been in this game.”
Boone had options to go with David Bednar or Mark Leiter Jr. but said he would only call either in an emergency.

Ex-Milwaukee Brewers star is groping for form in 2025 with the Yankees

Williams still hasn’t found a cure for his mound malaise. Dating back to July 2, he has given up 13 runs (12 earned) across 13 2/3 innings of work. He entered Friday’s game having allowed three earned runs on three hits in just 1.2 innings in his previous two starts. Williams is clearly struggling to find the same form he used to flash during his time with the Brewers. Williams played his first six seasons in the big leagues with the Brewers, earning two All-Star nods along the way.
“I’m not making pitches. It’s pretty simple. I stink right now,” Williams said after the series-opener against the Astros, per Bill Ladson of MLB.com. “You give me the ball, I try to do my best.”
On the season, Williams has a 5.73 ERA and 1.23 WHIP thorugh 48 appearances. He’s having trouble against the long ball, as he’s allowing 1.02 home runs per nine innings. Additionally, opponents are posting a .366 slugging against him, Williams’ worst since 2019 (.500).
