Back in 2023, the Milwaukee Brewers had a young crop of outfielders that they believed would help anchor their lineup for years to come. But, as is often the case in baseball, not all of them panned out. Sal Frelick, of course, has made a name for himself in Milwaukee, winning the NL Gold Glove in right field last year and his hitting .292/.350/.406 with eight home runs, 47 RBI, and 17 stolen bases this year.

But the other two young outfielders who, along with Frelick, were expected to be major contributors on the Brewers roster have not enjoyed the same level of success. Garrett Mitchell, unfortunately, has been unable to shake the injury bug and, once again, is out for the season with an injured shoulder.

The other, outfielder Joey Wiemer, is not even with the organization any more.

Wiemer was originally selected by the Brewers in the fourth round of the 2020 MLB amateur draft, and quickly shot through the team’s minor league system. Of course, there was no minor league season the year in which he was drafted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so he had to wait until 2021 to begin his professional career.

He spent the 2021 season with both Low-A and High-A, hitting .276/.391/.478 in Carolina and .336/.428/.719 in Wisconsin. He Wiemer had 27 home runs, 77 RBI, and 30 stolen bases between the two levels.

In 2022, he hit .256/.336/.465 with 21 home runs, 77 RBI, and 31 stolen bases, splitting time between Double-A and Triple-A. He also earned a spot on MLB’s Top-100 prospects list.

And, in 2023, he made his Major League debut.

Unfortunately, Wiemer never saw the kind of success he enjoyed in the minors while playing for the Brewers.

As a rookie, he hit just .204/.283/.362 with 13 home runs, 42 RBI, and 11 stolen bases. The following year, he did not make the Opening Day roster and spent most of the season in Triple-A. At the trade deadline in 2024, he was traded (along with Jakob Junis) to the Cincinnati Reds for Frankie Montas.

Wiemer only appeared in a couple of games with the Reds, but did not record an official plate appearance as he drew a walk in his only at bat. After the season ended, Cincinnati traded him (and Jonathan India) to the Kansas City Royals for Brady Singer.

But Wiemer continued to struggled with the Royals organization. Again, he did not make the Major League roster and his spent the entire season in Triple-A, where he has hit .182/.291/.312 with nine home runs, 38 RBI, and 12 stolen bases.

On Thursday, Kansas City designated him for assignment following the trade deadline, per MLB Trade Rumors.

If he clears waivers, the Royals can re-assign him elsewhere in their system. He could, though, reject the assignment and become a free agent.
