The Milwaukee Brewers have just about finalized their 2025 Opening Day roster for the upcoming MLB regular season. Unsurprisingly, two-time Silver Slugger William Contreras is going to be their starting catcher again this season. Last year, he appeared in 155 games, catching 120 of them. Eric Haase will be the backup following the departure of Gary Sanchez in free agency.
Indeed, the catcher position is in good hands for Milwaukee for the short-term. Contreras is still under club control through 2027, at which point he will become an unrestricted free agent. But as good as he has been, given the Brewers’ track record, he will likely be traded before then.
Fortunately for Milwaukee, their number one overall prospect is also a catcher. Unfortunately, he is coming off of a major shoulder injury.
Milwaukee Brewers Top Prospect Jeferson Quero Barely Played in 2024

Jeferson Quero is now Milwaukee’s number one prospect following Jackson Chourio‘s first season in the Majors in 2024. His high standing among all other Brewers prospects is quite impressive, given that he only had one at bat all year in 2024.
After winning the Rawlings Gold Glove at catcher in the minors in 2023, Quero was projected to have another breakout season in 2024. Unfortunately, he tore up his shoulder in the first game of the season, diving back into first base after a pickoff attempt.
The injury was devastating to the then 21-year-old’s development. He lost an entire season of reps and at-bats. However, his being named the top prospect despite this setback should show fans just how good he can be.
Jeferson Quero Will Start the 2025 Season at Double-A

Last spring, the Brewers sent Quero to Triple-A to begin the season. This year, however, he will start the year at Double-A, where he played his last full season in 2023.
And he will not be catching to start out:
#Brewers top prospect catcher Jeferson Quero will begin his season (reportedly just DH at-bats in the early going) at AA Biloxi, formally assigned to the Shuckers on Saturday. Hopefully won’t be long before his shoulder surgery rehab allows him to get back behind the plate.

Quero will be Nashville’s designated hitter until he gets to a point in his rehab that allows him to play catcher. As evident by his Gold Glove in 2023, he is an outstanding defensive catcher.
Still just 22 years old, he still has some improvements that he can make offensively. However, he is truly one of the brightest up and coming stars in all of baseball.
Soon, Milwaukee may have to make a choice between him and Contreras. Of course, this is a good problem to have.
