Milwaukee Brewers Jackson Chourio warms up during a workout ahead of the Tuesday Milwaukee Brewers National League Wild Card playoff series at American Family Field in Milwaukee on Monday, Sept. 30, 2024.
Milwaukee Brewers 2024 rookie of the year finalist Jackson Chourio has been in the baseball headlines recently. Last week, he finished as the runner up in the Pepsi Home Run Festival, which was held in Venezuela. Now, the 20 year old has made an important off-season announcement.

During each of the past two off-seasons, Jackson Chourio has participated in a home run derby held in Venezuela. This year his performance was much better as he hit seven home runs in the opening round, 12 in the semi finals, and then six in the finals. His 12 long balls in the semis were the most among the field, but his six in the final round was not enough to beat Eugenio Suarez.
Jackson Chourio has made an important off-season announcement
Leading up to his MLB debut, Jackson Chourio had spent his winters playing in the Venezuelan Winter League. As the youngest player, he played in 12 games for the Aguilas Del Zulia (Zuila Eagles) during the 2021-2022 off-season, 21 games a year later, and 17 last winter. This year, he has again elected to participate in a portion of their season.

Should the Milwaukee Brewers be concerned that Jackson Chourio is once again participating in the Venezuelan Winter League?
The biggest risk with Jackson Chourio participating in baseball during MLB’s off-season is injury. Last winter, the New York Mets lost prospect Ronny Mauricio for the entire 2024 regular season due to an ACL injury sustained during winter ball. While Chourio’s excitement and pride to play for the professional team in the city where he was born is understandable, it does come with risk. So far, the Brewers have not intervened.
