The Milwaukee Brewers are hard at work replenishing their 40-man roster after losing several players to free agency, non-tendered contracts, and the waiver wire. Earlier today, it was reported that Milwaukee had selected left-handed pitcher Connor Thomas away from the St. Louis Cardinals in the Rule 5 Draft. He was the Brewers’ first Rule 5 selection since Gus Varland in 2022.
Prior to Varland, Milwaukee had not made a Rule 5 selection since 2016.
Due to the rules surrounding the Rule 5 Draft, Thomas should be penciled in as making the Opening Day roster and should remain with the Major League team for the entirety of the season lest he be returned to St. Louis.
Brewers general manager Matt Arnold, however, was not done making moves on Wednesday.
The Milwaukee Brewers Signed Former Rangers Pitcher Grant Wolfram
According to Brewers insider Adam McCalvy, Milwaukee has also signed former Texas Rangers left-handed relief pitcher Grant Wolfram:
The Brewers have signed free agent LHP Grant Wolfram to a one-year deal. He turns 28 tomorrow and is coming off a 3.13 ERA as a reliever at the Double-A and Triple-A levels for the Rangers in 2024, with 60 strikeouts in 60 1/3 innings.

As McCalvy notes, Wolfram had a 3.13 ERA last year while appearing in 46 games (two at Double-A and 44 at Triple-A). He was 4-1 with six saves and struck out 69 batters in 60.1 innings.
Other Brewers reporters on X (formerly Twitter) have stated that Wolfram’s contract with the Brewers is a Major League deal.
This is significant for both Milwaukee and Wolfram for a couple of reasons. First, Wolfram has yet to make his Major League debut. That being said, he has risen quickly through the Rangers organization, advancing to a different level of the minors in each season.
Secondly, the Major League contract comes with a fresh set of options, which means Milwaukee can demote and promote him throughout the season.
With their transactions on Wednesday, Milwaukee’s 40-man roster now stands at 39.
