Rookie third baseman Caleb Durbin has been a big reason for the Milwaukee Brewers’ torrid streak. They knew he had a strong glove, but then he started barreling up baseballs too. Whereas earlier this season the hot corner was begging for an upgrade, Durbin has established himself as a valuable starter, one of many surprising contributors on the roster. Naturally, Brewers fans were all for it when he captured Milwaukee’s grit-and-grind spirit perfectly in a recent quote.
Caleb Durbin has been relevation for Milwaukee Brewers following slow start
Durbin’s upswing is no ephemeral flourish. Covering 161 at bats, he’s hit .311 with a .393 on-base percentage since late May. In that time, Durbin has smacked four of his five homeruns, piled up 11 doubles, and swiped seven bases. He has driven in 21 runs and scored 28.

His counting stats don’t even measure his full value, which is boosted by excellent defense. Despite playing just 79 games, he is tied for third on the team in Wins Above Replacement and ranks second among National League rookies. He’s playing so well that trading for a third base slugger like Eugenio Suarez, long linked to the Brewers, no longer makes sense. If they acquire hitting help, it should come at another position.
Wednesday’s 10-2 trouncing of Seattle gave Milwaukee its MLB-best 61st win of the season. Although he enjoyed most of the day off before pinch-hitting late, Durbin is the one who has fans fired up with his remark to reporter Bob Nightengale.
“We know how good we are,” Durbin declared. “If you’re not ready to scrap nine innings with us, at the end of the game, you’re going to be on the wrong end of it.”
Just ask the Dodgers, who in the season series suffered five losses by six total runs.

Including a 17-hit day against the Mariners, the Brewers have scrapped 22 across the plate in their past three wins without hitting a homerun. Not exactly the Bronx Bombers, just the best team in baseball.
Commenting on social media, Milwaukeeans were quick to approve Durbin’s message.
I LOVE MR DURBIN

Over two months remain in the season, and there’s still plenty of time for things to go sideways – injuries and low power could finally come back to bite them. Thus far, though, the Brewers have proven that their formula works.

They have also been incredibly resilient, overcoming blow after blow to the rotation to field MLB’s second-lowest starters’ ERA. If Milwaukee falters, it won’t be for a lack of hustle. As Durbin says, the Brew Crew will never stop scrapping.
